Everyone tells you to follow your passion in choosing a career, to do what you love. But most people translate that into “pick a job that would be fun!” Then they start a business… and fail. Hard.
What I got from the — wholly excellent — article is this: Do what you love, not what is fun. Because if you do what is fun, you neglect all the hard work that is required to be successful. Do what you love, but do it smart.
Make a business plan. Learn how to manage a business. Be prepared for taxes, insurance, rent, and all the other niggling details of running your own business and being your own boss.
It’s your passion, so do it right. Because you probably won’t get a second chance.
Most business owners are dumb as hell. But that doesn’t have to be you.
